Finding the Right Engagement Ring: A Jeweler’s Perspective
Share
Shopping for an engagement ring can be strangely stressful for something that’s supposed to be romantic. Some people come in with Pinterest boards, spreadsheets, and twenty-seven saved screenshots. Other people walk in saying, “I think she likes yellow gold?” while looking totally confused.
Both are normal, as every romance story is unique. As it turns out though, there is a lot more to consider than just how a ring looks! Here are the four questions I consider when helping a couple find the perfect engagement ring.
1. What is her personality?

Is she a romance novel enthusiast? An outdoorsy, campfire-building kind of person? Someone who loves getting dressed up for a fancy night out? Minimal and understated? Vintage-loving? Artistic? Glamorous? Usually, the right style starts revealing itself once we start talking about who she actually is.
2. What kind of jewelry does she already wear?

Simple yellow gold hoops? Silver jewelry? Colorful beads? Layered necklaces? No jewelry at all? People usually already have an aesthetic they’re naturally drawn to, and engagement rings should feel like an extension of that, not like playing dress-up as someone else.
3. How would you describe her lifestyle?

Is she a nurse? A hairstylist? Does she lift weights? Work with her hands? Work in an office? Very active? Hard on jewelry? That matters more than people think. Lifestyle helps determine what kinds of settings and mountings are actually going to hold up well over time. Some rings are delicate and beautiful, but better suited for lower-impact daily wear. Other people need something more substantial and durable.
4. What are you expecting to spend?

At that point, the goal becomes finding the most beautiful and well-made ring possible within those parameters, style, lifestyle, and budget all working together.
Honestly, sometimes the ring from the Pinterest board really is the one. I think it’s still important to try rings on in person. I’ve seen a lot of people surprised by what they actually fall in love with once it’s on their hand. Sometimes the style they thought they wanted ends up not feeling like them at all.
The best engagement rings usually aren’t about trends or impressing strangers. They’re about finding something that feels personal, lasting, and perfectly right the moment they put it on.
