Getting your jewelry appraised can be critical to do for a few reasons.
1. It is good for you to know the value of your nicer pieces of jewelry.
2. An appraisal is a must if you plan to obtain jewelry insurance for any of your finer pieces, like an engagement ring.
What Is A Jewelry Appraisal?
Nicer pieces of jewelry, like an engagement ring, typically come with a diamond grading report (a.k.a. diamond certificate) and a jewelry appraisal. The grading report is created at a G.I.A. lab and it typically lists the specs of the diamond; it’s color, cut, carat and clarity. However, this report doesn’t provide a value.
The jewelry appraisal in comparison does evaluate the entire piece of jewelry and provides a value. Our appraiser will look at the metals, the piece design and all of the diamonds or gemstones used to make that piece of jewelry.
Go To An Independent Jewelry Appraiser (Like Estate Jewelers)
Often times when you buy a piece of jewelry at Retail, an appraisal will come from the jeweler you bought it from. It’s always a good idea to get your own appraisal at an independent jewelry appraiser.
Appraising jewelry is an art, not an exact science, so you may get two different results from two different appraisers for the same piece of jewelry. Sometimes the appraisal you receive from the jeweler you purchased the piece from can be a little inflated.
Why would they do this? Because it can work to the advantage of the salesperson; it makes it easier for them to sell the piece. They inflate the jewelry appraisal value and offer it to you for much less than the appraised value, thus making you think you are getting a “bargain.”
We don’t operate that way at Estate Jewelers. We deal with you openly and honestly.
Get Periodic Appraisals
It’s advisable to have your jewelry appraised every couple of years because with market fluctuations of gold, silver and gemstones, the value of your jewelry may change too. As you get more current appraisals you should provide them to your insurance company so they can adjust the value of your jewelry insurance up or down as needed.
